Today I was listening to one of my favorite Disney tracks: the audio from Walt Disney’s last film about his vision for EPCOT, the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow. It got me thinking that Walt’s vision was never truly fulfilled the way he envisioned it — a towering cosmopolitan hotel in the center of an enclosed city where public transportation was the way and traffic flowed smoothly beneath the city. It was where products of the future would be tested in the homes of EPCOT’s residents; where everyone was employed and contributed to the greater good of his or her neighbors’ lives. No crime. No pollution.
Why do I like listening to this so much? I realized that even though it upsets me that his dream was never fully created, it’s the imagination of the concept that still makes the explanation of it all so exciting. While some of our dreams may not always come true for one reason or another, just imagining the future is exciting. I think few of us truly utilizes our imagination every day. What’s wrong with daydreaming? Or envisioning a fantasy or a utopian city like Walt did?
Each day I imagine where I’ll travel next… What cities I’ll explore… The people I’ll meet… The adventures I’ll have… I guess this is why people read — to put themselves somewhere else. If Walt were alive I guarantee you that EPCOT would have been created in full. Some aspects of his vision are alive at Walt Disney World indeed, so his dream was not a waste. He put so much effort into his imaginings and dreams that it goes to show us that using our imagination can create wonders, fantasies, and all sorts of inspirations. Inspirations that can make our dreams bloom into other amazing things.
