Liking Your Job

Why does talk about work seem such a taboo topic when outside of work? I feel that too many people dislike their jobs. At my job all I hear is complaining sometimes, however I feel that the good definitely outweighs the negative. I asked co-workers why they feel this way and many say they don’t see themselves going anywhere there or there is little opportunity for growth. I feel the exact opposite! My company is very supportive of growth and new opportunities.

In fact, my company is one of the best companies I have worked for and others who have been there a while say the same. So why do so many people complain about a situation that in fact is pretty darn good? MSNBC published an article back in February that said Americans hate their jobs more than ever, and it usually lies with the younger workers age 25 or less.

“The thing that bugged most workers the most about their jobs were bonus plans and promotion policies. Workload and potential for growth were rated poorly also.”

Still, outside of work I love sharing stories of my day at work. It makes me feel good about my job that I can share it with others and laugh. When you make work a taboo topic you make it like something bad, something that can never be a good thing. You need to make the most of your job and not focus on the negative (bad comes with every job). I agree that at times it’s nice to get away from work and focus on something else. But, something that we spend most of the day doing shouldn’t be forbidden from conversation.
