Who are the users of Web 2.0? The new Internet revolution has made wonderful improvements to our online experience, but what cohorts of users connect to technology in what ways?
Pew Internet’s recent study shows that Americans are divided into three main categories of technology users: Elite Tech Users, Middle-of-the-road Tech Users, and Few Tech Assets. Interestingly, 49% of the population falls in the last category, those who don’t place technology as a central role in their lives. 31% are Elite Tech Users who utilize Web 2.0, blogging, social networks, cell phones, and other technology that improves their productivity.
The comprehensive report also uncovered people’s feelings about various technologies. One of the biggest affects of information technology is the ability to learn new things and keep in touch with friends and family. The “Omnivores” category (8% of pop.) coined by Pew, contain those who are active in Web 2.0 activities, blogging, or managing their own web pages. The average number of IT devices owned by that group is 6 and the median age is 28. Those that are “Off the Network” comprise 15% of the population (median age is 64) and have no cell phones nor Internet. These tend to be older adults content with old media.
