In my thought stream about celebrities, you’ll find that so many of them begin as wholesome teenagers and quickly turn sleazy. There is an apparent sexualization of youth and now children.
The American Psychological Association has put out a study that said “an entire generation of children is becoming psychologically damaged because of their sexualisation by the media and fashion outlets.” In fact, I like this quote by Frank Furedi from The First Post, an online UK publication.
“…many parents dress their daughters like tarts - sending five-year-olds out wearing ‘Flirt’ T-shirts and letting them dress Bratz dolls in fishnets - and that sexual innuendo is prevalent in kids’ entertainment.” - Frank Furedi, The First Post
I see the mainstream talk and general consensus that sex is completely casual and almost careless in its meaning. Children are bombarded with sexualized images everywhere and at some point it’s got to be damaging. Furedi continues by saying that the problem lies with the pornographication of children ’s lives, where through images of certain celebrities, sex is shown as something dirty. “We live in a world where sex has become estranged from intimacy, passion and love.” He points out that the Bratz company even puts out dolls targeted to three-year-olds that are dressed in leather and lingerie. One mother is fuming over these dolls. Yeah, the doll’s wearing a thong.
While these images may not be sexual specifically, they are pornographic in that they objectify sex. Read More…
