Information At Your Fingertips

I am a concierge for rich people. My company offers these services to various companies who inturn offer it to their customers and employees. I get scores of calls for various requests from tickets, flowers, and dining, to finding the value of a 1914 Barber Dime, locating an interpreter, or having a coat delivered to a New York hotel room. I have to be ready for anything that could be requested. And, since I’m all about efficiency, I have organized my browser and computer with everything I need just a click away.

So I have my links for Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Google Local, among other things right on my links bar. The unusual requests go through Google of course. It’s one of the best tools for converting currency (30 USD in GBP) or the weather (weather Boston MA) or even the time in another city (time in Paris).

  • Another great site for quick information is 4INFO. Just enter a sports team and you get the latest score instantly or enter an airline and flight number and you have instant flight status.
  • One site I discovered just the other day could be the answer to my prayers: Sugarcodes. It’s sort of a web command line. Enter “flight JBU1223″ and you instantly get the flight status for JetBlue flight 1223. Enter “time Munich Germany” and the current time is displayed. You can even create your own codes. I created one for Ticketmaster so if anyone requests ticket information I can simply enter “tm Jersey Boys” and get the show or venue listings. What about show synopsis? “pb Jersey Boys” will search the Playbill site for that show. And, anything you enter that is not a Sugarcode will simply search for the term via Google. It’s an ultimate Google in a way.
  • And, you might as well add a customized tab to your Personalized Google Homepage. I have added a multiple time zone clock, currency converter, driving directions, flight status, and quick bookmark links.

It’s really quite wonderful that we have so much information instantly accessible. Another good tip is to save oft-used information on your desktop. There are some text that I use all the time so I created a text file with the various lines that I can simply copy and paste. Common lists and other frequently referenced files can be placed on your desktop too. This of course is perfect for my job. I typically wouldn’t clutter my own personal desktop.

Good stuff, I work in the hotel industry and found this article useful. I use 4info often since you can use your phone and don’t need to be on a computer. The weather alerts are helpful just as I’m stepping out the door.
