After seeing Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and The Corporation, I’ve become quite disturbed by not only the state of our climate and global warming, but our government’s lack or concern for the future of our earth. The United States is the largest contributor to greenhosue gases and carbon emissions which ruin our atmosphere. The winter here in the northeast has been very warm so far and I’m not the only one suspecting it’s because of global warming.
So what are we to do? Of course we can save electricity, use public transportation, or get a programmable thermostat, but sometimes it’s much larger than that. This is where offsetting your carbon footprint comes in. I discovered a great called Carbonfund.org. There, you can calculate how many tons of CO2 are produced by your direct impacts with travel, electricity, or gas usage. Then, you can donate money that goes toward environmental projects specifically meant to reduce carbon emissions, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation.
The average American is responsible for 10 tons of CO2 emissions through direct energy use. Of course, the things you buy were produced in factories which produced carbon emissions. Other things you do factor in as well, making the average person responsible for about 23 tons of CO2. To offset your direct carbon footprint of 10 tons, you can contribute $55 for the year. Carbonfund.org is a great way to make a difference to global warming. Learn more about saving energy first and then offset what you can’t reduce.
